FBI investigating Nashville attack involving exchange student
NASHVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — The Federal Bureau of Investigations is now investigating an attack by an alleged white supremacist on a Chinese exchange student.
Court documents state that Dana Ericson told investigators that he is a white supremacist and that he attacked the 18-year-old student because she was Asian.
Since the attack, the FBI has announced the crime is being investigated by its office, saying in a statement:
The Indianapolis FBI Field Office has opened a civil rights investigation into the assault of a foreign exchange student from China. The FBI will collect all available facts and evidence and will ensure that the investigation is conducted in a fair, thorough and impartial manner. As this is an ongoing investigation we are not able to comment further at this time.”
The victim suffered a cut in the back two inches in length. Doctors estimate the hatchet came just an inch from the teen’s spine.
The court has ordered a psychiatric exam for Ericson. Ericson is due back in court on April 11 for a competency hearing.
