Foiled burglary leaves 1 dead as police search for 2 other suspects
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — One burglary suspect is dead and police are searching for two others after they tried to break into a home on the city’s southeast side, according to IMPD.
Police dogs and drones were being used Thursday night to search for the two suspects who left the scene, one on foot and the other in a blue or black Chevy van.
According to Capt. Robert Troutt with IMPD, a homeowner called police Thursday morning to report a burglary to a home in the 6400 block of Winslow Drive, near Stop 11 Road between Arlington Avenue and Combs Road. That homeowner then made plans for someone to watch over the home, which was vacant and for sale, in case the burglars came back. Police did not explain the relationship between the man watching the home and the homeowner.
Around 6:30 p.m. Thursday, officers arrived at that residence on a report of a person shot. The three men who had burglarized the home earlier returned to collect more items, and the man sent by the homeowner shot at them, killing one man and possibly injuring another, Troutt said.
Burglars often steal items from a vacant home in more than one trip, piling up items and returning for them later, Troutt said.
Police described the suspect seen leaving the scene on foot as a heavyset white man, while they did not have a description for the suspect who left the scene in a blue or black Chevy van.
Both the owner of the home and the person who shot at the suspects were cooperating with police on Thursday night.
