Plainfield man dies in I-465 crash near Pendleton Pike

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A Plainfield man died Tuesday morning in a crash on Interstate 465, Indiana State Police said.

Emergency crews were called shortly before noon Tuesday to I-465 northbound near Pendleton Pike on the northwest side. They found Shawn Patterson, 51, lying in the road, unresponsive and unconscious. He died at the crash scene, police said.

A preliminary investigation showed Patterson was having trouble with a load in his pickup and had pulled onto the right shoulder before exiting his truck to make adjustments to the load near the back of the truck. That’s when a Chevrolet Trailblazer sport utility vehicle driving by Drew Collins, 37, of Indianapolis, left the road, drove onto the shoulder and struck Patterson.

Collins received minor injuries, police said.

A semitractor following the SUV also collected wreckage, but that driver, who was not named, was not hurt, police said.

A news release from state police added, “The investigation into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing and there is no further information to release at this time. Three lanes of I-465 were closed for several hours while the crash was investigated.”
