INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A homeless woman died after she was hit while crossing a street Saturday night on the northwest side, police said.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers and emergency medical crews were called to reports of a personal-injury crash and a pedestrian struck shortly before 9:15 p.m. Saturday in a commercial area at West 86th Street and Michigan Road. They found the accident happened in the southbound lanes of Michigan Road just before it crosses 86th Street.

The woman, who was not immediately identified, is known in the area. Locals say she’s often seen pushing a grocery cart loaded with plastic bags containing various goods.

Police said she crossed the street at a section without a crosswalk.
