NYPD, LAPD send thoughts and support for IMPD after Officer Leath killed in the line of duty

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Two of the largest police departments in the country are sending their thoughts and support to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

The New York police commissioner tweeted Saturday night that IMPD Officer Breann Leath was lost to a senseless act of violence and that the NYPD stands with her “family friends and colleagues in this difficult time.”

The Los Angeles police chief also tweeted on behalf of LAPD, saying “our thoughts and prayers are with her family and fellow officers.”

The two departments are joining others nationwide in sharing their support for IMPD after Officer Leath was killed in the line of duty on Thursday.

Leath, 24, was responding to a domestic dispute just after 2:45 p.m. Thursday in the 1800 block of Edinburge Square at an apartment complex when she was shot and killed.

A woman inside the residence was also shot. She was taken to a hospital. Police describe her condition as stable. She has not been publicly identified by police.

IMPD on Friday announced the arrest of 27-year-old Elliahs Dorsey on preliminary charges of murder and attempted murder in the case.

A Friday police procession moved Leath from the downtown coroner’s office to Crown Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery.

The Central Indiana Police Foundation has established a fund in Leath’s honor at the request of her family. The fund will serve as the official fundraiser to accept donations on behalf of the family, to assist with burial arrangements and to provide a trust for her young son.
