Theater program is helping young actors ‘SOAR’ to their next level

CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) — Soar.

It’s the main theme in a mission to help kids reach their full potential on the stage.

Katherine Clemons and Amanda Boldt, Directors of Education in the Student Theatre Education Program, are running a four-week program that is trying to get them where they need to be.

“Some people would ask us is it an acronym and we say, no, it really is just about flying and taking that leap,” Clemons said.

Boldt and Clemons are teachers, but they’re also currently working in theater.

They say this program has something that others don’t.

“This program is different because we really are treating these kids like professionals and they’re getting to meet professionals and work with professionals the whole way through,” Boldt said.

They aim to sharpen their students’ technical strengths while also finding their weaknesses on stage.

“It just makes you want to be loud and bring everything you have to the table,” porgam participant, Grace Miller, said.

Alex Brophie, a junior at Mccutchen High School, made an hour drive from Lafayette just to be a part of this program, but he says it was worth every trip.

“It’s improved me as a performer as well as a person,” Brophie said.

“We want to get to know you and who you are because we can’t shape you as an actor without knowing that first,” Boldt said.

Now they hope word continues to spread and students from all over Indiana continue to come.

“One of the big things that we’re both big on is that we want to involve everyone,” Clemons said.

“We don’t want them to think that it’s just a certain group of kids who can do this or a certain group of kids who can do theater.”
