Work begins for 2020 widening, repaving of Monon Trail

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Watch out for some hiccups on the Monon Trail over the next couple of weeks as construction begins.

During weekdays, crews are going to be drilling some holes in the trail to prepare for a widening project in 2020. The construction means you’ll have to ride or walk around some work, but the trail should always be open.

The first day of work is completed, and people told us it didn’t affect them much, and they’re glad it’s happening.

Justin Schrock, a Monon Trail rider, said, “Depending on where you’re at, it can get kind of dangerous, as congested as it gets. Obviously, construction is always a little bit of a hassle, but if it’s going to make the experience safer and more enjoyable, I think it’s probably the right move.”

The work started near 10th Street on Tuesday morning and will move north to 96th Street as the project continues.

The final trail design will call for the path to be from 10-14 feet wide at various locations along the corridor with a 2-foot grass shoulder where practical that slopes off either edge of the new pavement.
