Franciscan Health lab recognized as a national leader in brain disorder detection
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Franciscan Health Indianapolis announced earlier this week it’s electroencephalographic (EEG) lab earned one of the nation’s highest recognitions establishing itself as a leader in brain disorder detection and diagnosis.
The recognition comes from the Laboratory Accreditation Board, ABRET, an independent agency designed to assess EEG labs for the highest quality technical and professional standards.
“We are pleased to receive the accreditation and it underscores the commitment and the professionalism of EEG technologists and team,” Sharon Anee, administrative director of Orthopedics, Spine and Neurosciences for Franciscan Health, said in a press release.
The accreditation process is long, arduous and stressful.
“It took about a year to gather all of the required information,” Bobbi Poore, registered EEG technologist and manager of neurology testing, told News 8. “[The accrediting agency] required proof of staff credentials and continuing education records and departmental codes as well as infection control and quality improvement policies.”
The agency also shadowed lab neurologists and technicians for technical competency and practitioner response should something go wrong.
Brain disorders, also known as neurological disorders, can range from epilepsy to dementia, abnormal bleeding to brain tumors. If not detected early, some of these conditions can progress quickly and possibly lead to premature death.
Tens of thousands of people are affected by neurological disorders in the U.S. alone. The brain is the most complex organ of the body. When the brain is compromised, all other body systems are affected. An EEG is a critical diagnostic tool to catch conditions before they worsen.
“Our technologists always work to do their best by keeping up on the [rapidly] changing field and this is another way to recognize their hard work and dedication to the field of neurodiagnostics,” Poore said. “Any [patient] undergoing an EEG in our facility will not only be tested using the best technology but will also receive the most compassionate care, which is sacred to Franciscan Health’s mission.”
