New fitness program at Gigi’s Playhouse helps those with Down syndrome

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — There’s a new fitness program at GiGi’s Playhouse Indy called GiGiFit, which combines physical therapy with a strong fitness focus for individuals with Down syndrome.

The program specifically addresses hypotonia and excessive joint laxity.

“People with Down syndrome typically have low muscle tone,” says Denisse Jensen, executive director of GiGi’s Playhouse Indy. “Connective tissue problems also tend to make their ligaments and tendons excessively flexible. GiGiFit focuses on building strength, endurance, stability and movement control.”

GiGiFit is for individuals of all ages with Down syndrome and encourages independence, confidence and overall health. The program promotes wellness through nutrition.

GiGi’s Playhouse provides educational and therapeutic programs at no charge to families.
