Person of interest in attempted murder arrested in Sullivan County

HYMERA, Ind. (WTHI) – Chaotic moments in Sullivan County started early Sunday morning.

Sullivan County Sheriff Clark Cottom told News 10 it all started with a tip from the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office.

“They were looking for an individual that they had reason to believe could be headed to the Sullivan County area,” said Cottom.

Police identified the man as Gregory Grider of Muncie, Indiana. Police say Grider is a person of interest in an attempted murder that happened 6:30 Sunday morning in Muncie.

Police say investigators set up a stakeout, outside of a home, where they believed Grider would be headed to.

Within a few hours, police say the vehicle showed up in front of a residence on Hickory Street in Hymera, Indiana. Cottom says they were able to conduct a felony stop and safely remove two women from the vehicle.

Once the women were out of the vehicle, Police say Grider slipped into the driver’s seat and attempted to take off.

“He backed the vehicle up and struck the Jasonville City Police car, the two vehicles collided,” said Cottom.

Cottom said Grider attempted to ram the vehicle into the police car for the second time. Cottom said a Sullivan County Deputy was in the police car during that time. Cottom says that’s when an officer had to take action.

“He stepped from the Jasonville car and fired one round into the suspect vehicle,” said Cottom.

Police say Grider took off southbound in the vehicle and crashed into the intersection of Hickory and Depot Street. After crashing the car, police say Grider got out and started running away from police. Police were able to catch up to him and arrested Grider without incident.

A chaotic scene, ending with a wanted man in police custody. Cottom says he’s thankful it ended without anyone harmed.

“It was a very dangerous situation,” Cottom said, “We’re very fortunate no one was injured or killed here today”.

Cottom says the investigation will now be turned over to Indiana State Police.

Officials say another person, along with Grider, was wanted in connection with the attempted murder in Delaware County. Officials report that person was also arrested by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department.
