Rose-Hulman uses April Fools’ Day to trick community
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WISH) – Rose-Hulman got into the spirit of April Fools by releasing information about a new program they are going to offer in the 2016-2017 academic school year.
According to a release from the college, they are partnering with NASA to offer the first study abroad opportunity in Space.
Four students will spend the winter quarter in the International Space Station (ISS) and conduct experiments alongside professional scientists.
The announcement of the new program comes after a $500,000 NASA grant awarded to Rose-Hulman’s physics and optical engineering professor, Paul Leisher. Leisher will use the grant to design and test semiconductor lasers. He will also include undergraduate and graduate students to enable high speed free-space optical communication systems.
Albert Yorick, NASA’s director of collegiate outreach said the new program marks the agency’s latest effort to promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, and its first initiative targeting college students.
Applications are being accepted through May 1. Ten finalists will be chosen to complete for the four coveted slots, with the winners to be announced June 15. The selected students will begin a six-month conditioning process in July.
