Sheriff: 2 dead in Delaware County crash
SELMA, Ind. (WISH) — Two people are dead after a single-vehicle crash in Delaware County late Saturday.
Emergency crews were called to the 800 block of South Albany Street in Selma around 9 p.m., dispatchers told 24-Hour News 8.
Delaware County Sheriff Ray Dudley said investigators believe a vehicle was southbound on South Albany Street at a high rate of speed when it went airborne over railroad tracks, hit a parked vehicle and went through a front yard.
It then hit a bump in the yard, went airborne again and struck a tree before bursting into flames, Dudley added.
The bodies of both people inside, identified as a man and a woman, were burned beyond recognition, Dudley said. He said Sunday both people appear to have died before the vehicle caught fire.
Delaware County Coroner Scott Hahn said DNA or dental records will likely be used to identify the victims.
The vehicle will be moved to a controlled setting where the remains will be removed, Hahn said.
Autopsies are scheduled for Monday.
