‘Zone Extra’ Athlete of Week: Lawrence North’s Donaven McCulley

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — He’s a three-year starter, and a downright dangerous dual-threat quarterback out of Lawrence North.

Before he heads to IU next fall, News 8 honors Donaven McCulley as our first “Zone Extra” Athlete of the Week.

In Lawrence North’s season opener, McCulley threw four touchdowns for 248 yards in air, and added another 157 yards on the ground.

“It didn’t surprise me at all because I knew what we could do on the field, we know that when we come out here, we’re going to put on a show,” said McCulley.

McCulley, Omar Cooper Jr, and the rest of the Wildcats’ walked away from Week 1 with a 62-34 win over Avon, tallying over 650 yards of total offense.

“We figured we’d put up some points, but we weren’t too sure we’d put up points that fast, and be that explosive that early in the game, or as early in the season,” head coach Patrick Mallory added, “Not 48 points in the first half.”

LN has struggled to claw their way through the MIC, and the Wildcats haven’t had a winning season in 15 years.

McCulley fully intends on flipping that script.

McCullrey said, “First, I want to get that sectional championship, and then I want to get deeper into the playoffs and then talk about winning state and stuff like that, and Mr. Football.”
