GQ facing backlash after putting Holy Bible on list of ’21 Books You Don’t Have to Read’

NEW YORK, NY (WCMH) – GQ Magazine is under fire after putting the Holy Bible on its list of “21 Books You Don’t Have to Read.”

The magazine — known for its style, grooming and lifestyle advice — published the article on Thursday, and is now facing a firestorm of criticism online. The Bible comes in at number 12 on the list. Other books on the list include classics like The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, Dracula by Bram Stoker and The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien.

In the article, Jesse Ball writes the Bible is “repetitive, self-contradictory, sententious, foolish, and even at times ill-intentioned.” Ball also recommends The Notebook by Agota Kristof as an alternative.

Twitter lit up with criticism, with one user calling GQ the “Most Overrated Magazine Of All Time.”

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, more than 5 billion copies of the Christian Bible have been printed, with 2,123 languages printing at least one book of the Bible.
