Armed man kills self after police chase ending on I-65 NB

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – An armed man killed himself Friday night inside a truck after a police chase that ended with a standoff on Interstate 65 at the 38th Street exit.

Multiple police vehicles gathered around the stopped truck after 5 p.m. on I-65 northbound a few hundred feet east of the North Kessler Boulevard North Drive overpass on the 38th Street exit. That’s where the police chase ended after beginning on the city’s east side off East Michigan Street between North Rural Street and North Sherman Drive.

Police were seeking the man, who was not being identified until his family is notified, after a disturbance with a gun, said Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Deputy Chief Chris Bailey. Officers had been told the man had a gun inside the truck.

During the pursuit, police said, the man purposefully struck a police vehicle.

The deputy chief said he listened to the chase on a police radio and believed that IMPD followed proper procedures in the chase.

Bailey also noted an increase in suicides across the country because of people dealing with personal issues. He encouraged people going through such issues to seek help.

Police had asked motorists to avoid the area during the evening rush hour.

A special tactics and weapons team and crisis negotiators had been called to the scene in hopes of ending the standoff peacefully.
