Suspect, victim identified in southeast side gas station shooting

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Officials have identified the suspect and the victim in a fatal southeast side gas station shooting.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office says 17-year-old Jack Sumner Jr. has been identified as the victim of the shooting, which happened Monday night at 3631 S. Keystone Ave.

An IMPD officer patrolling the area heard the shots fired and responded to the gas station. Sumner was pronounced deceased after being taken to a hospital.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says 22-year-old Tyrese Roberts has been arrested in the case. IMPD announced the arrest on Tuesday and provided his name on Wednesday morning.

Online jail records indicate Roberts is being held on preliminary charges of murder and is in court Thursday morning.

Sumner was a Southport High School student.

Perry Township Schools has said counseling services will be offered to students and staff.

According to court documents, the sister of Roberts told police there is “a beef and hard feelings” between Sumner and Roberts because Sumner used to date Roberts’ girlfriend.
