Fight against human trafficking during Final Four weekend

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — When major sporting events come to town, there are often concerns about sex trafficking.

This Final Four weekend, volunteers are working to help potential victims.

For the last two weeks, about 20 volunteers have been leaving special bars of soap at some hotels and motels across the city.

The bars have a phone number for the young men and women to call for help.

State Representative Christina Hale (D-Indianapolis) is a volunteer.

She said they use inconspicuous soap because it is often a challenge to communicate with the victims.

“You know they have nefarious people involved in their lives keeping watch, they’re always under watch, and we have to find a way to get through to them,” she said.

Hale told 24-Hour News 8 the hotels don’t want to be mentioned by name.

But, they have been welcoming because they want to help the fight against this crime.

“At my first stop, the hotel manager just grabbed my hand and said ‘you know if we can just save one person this is so worth it, thank you for what you’re doing,’” she said.
