Fire at Columbus apartment complex displaces 28 residents
COLUMBUS, Ind. (WISH) – Twenty-eight people are without a home following a Saturday night fire at a Columbus apartment complex.
According to the Columbus Fire Department, crews arrived on scene at an apartment complex in the 200 block of Stonegate Drive in Columbus just after 11:30 p.m.
Upon arriving on scene, heavy smoke and fire was discovered coming from a two-story apartment building with self-evacuation already in progress.
Initially, crews attempted to enter the building but due to the intensity of the fire and surrounding smoke, they were forced to battle the flames from outside the building.
Flames did affect the roof of the structure with portions of it caving in.
Eventually, crews managed to get the fire under control.
In all, 12 apartment units were affected, forcing 28 residents from their homes. The Red Cross will work with those displaced residents to find temporary shelter.
There were no injuries reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
