Four teens dead in SR 37 crash in Morgan County
MORGAN COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — A fatal crash killed four teenage boys in Morgan County Wednesday night. All four teenagers attended Brownsburg High School.
The crash happened on State Road 37 near Cragen Road. Northbound and southbound lanes were closed for several hours for an investigation, according to Indiana State Police. The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office assisted ISP with the crash.
ISP said that the crash involved a Ford Taurus and a Honda Odyssey. Investigators say the Taurus crossed over the median and into the path of the Odyssey striking it head on.
Five people were in the car that crossed the median. The driver and three passengers died. They were identified as 17-year-old Mathew Howard Chambers, 18-year-old Lucas Edwin Kenworthy, 17-year-old Noah James Tex and 17-year-old Riley Davis Hurst.
The surviving passenger went to IU Health Methodist Hospital and was “stable” as of Thursday morning. The Morgan County Coroner said he is 21 years old. The surviving passenger was the only person wearing a seat belt in the car. Officials said he suffered from broken ribs and a lung and spleen contusion. A medical helicopter was called to the scene.
The conditions of those in the Odyssey were not clear, but officials say they complained of soreness at the scene.
“Any time of the year is awful (and) around Christmas and New Year’s, absolutely horrific for the families. It’s tough on these troopers out here that work that crash as well. Our prayers and our thoughts right now are with the families of these victims and helping them with any type of resource that we could give them right now,” said ISP Sgt. Curt Durnil.
The cause was still under investigation Thursday morning.
The high school said they will have counselors at the school for anyone wishing to speak with them.
