Hit-and-run suspect that struck grandmother, child turns himself in
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arrested a man in connection to the pickup truck that hit a grandmother, causing a child to be ejected from a stroller last month.
According to police, 31-year-old Benjamin Harrison turned himself in on October 11 as the hit-and-run suspect. He was charged for failing to stop at an accident involving serious bodily injury, and failing to stop at an accident involving injury.
The incident happened in the 4400 block of West Washington just after 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21.
Both the Wayne Township Fire Department and IMPD responded to the scene.
After arriving on scene, members of WFTD began performing life-saving measures on the 2-year-old.
WTFD said the child was in stable condition and had been transported to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health. The grandmother was in good condition.
Harrison had his initial hearing Wednesday at 1 p.m.
Court documents show that IMPD detectives used witness statements and surveillance video from nearby businesses to get a vehicle image, which led them to Harrison.
Those court documents state that Harrison told police he didn’t think he had hit anyone, which is why he said he drove away.
Grandmother Kellie Fink said she was crossing Washington when she was hit.
She thought her granddaughter, Madison, had been killed because she saw the stroller go into the air.
She was glad that a suspect had been arrested in the case.
“I’m pleased with it, I’m glad that he’s been arrested,” Fink said, “I don’t think that somebody should be able to get away with it.”
