COLUMBUS, Ind. (Inside INdiana Business) — Columbus-based Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) is further expanding its reach into hands-free driving innovation. The manufacturer says it will be launching a set of software features to integrate its powertrains with Automated Driving System technologies.

An ADS vehicle can essentially perform all driving operations and monitor the environment around the vehicle.

Cummins say it is already collaborating with multiple ADS technology companies to bring the technology in commercial markets in an efficient and safe way.

“With our investment in and commitment to autonomous vehicle technologies, Cummins is prepared to support our customers by deploying autonomous vehicle technologies across the full range of powertrains, including advanced diesel, natural gas, hybrid, or fully electric and hydrogen fuel cells,” said J Michael Taylor, general manager of powertrain integration for Cummins Inc.

Taylor says ADS companies are relying on Cummins’ integration expertise and powertrain solutions to provide a software solution to accelerate the adoption of autonomous technology in heavy duty trucking industry.

Cummins says it is currently testing more than 100 vehicles in coordination with ADS technology companies.
