SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WISH) — A 2-year-old boy has died after bystanders found him in a retention pond Tuesday afternoon, a Speedway Fire Department battalion chief said Tuesday night.

Speedway Police Department personnel were sent to Eagle Creek Court Apartments, which is near the intersection of Cunningham and Crawfordsville roads. That’s just southeast of the I-465 intersection at Crawfordsville Road.

Speedway Fire Department, police and emergency medical personnel were involved in effort to revive the boy, taking over for the bystanders, who also had called 911, said battalion chief Mike Cheney.

The mother told authorities she had been searching about 20 minutes for the boy.

The boy died Tuesday night at Riley Hospital for Children, Cheney said.

It was not immediately clear where the boy was found in the water, but the apartment complex has at least one pond.
