Community rallies around baseball team who lost equipment in fire

High school baseball team loses equipment in fire

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A fire at an Indianapolis high school’s baseball field destroyed all of their equipment earlier this week.

The Emmerich Manual High School baseball team is supposed to start practice in just a couple of weeks. That was until all of their equipment burned in a fire. The team could have thrown in the towel, but thanks to the community it looks like they are going to be able to play ball.

It was around 11:30 Monday night when the storage facility holding all of the baseball equipment from bats to gloves and uniforms burned, leaving behind nothing.

“We lost just about everything,” said baseball coach Jeff Breeding.

It is still not clear what started the fire, but the coach says he thinks someone broke into the facility for warmth and plugged something into an outlet that resulted in the fire.

Once the team came to terms with what happened it was time to make a decision on what to do next.

“What are we going to do coach? What are we going to do? And I said, ‘we will figure it out,’” said Coach Breeding.

And figure it out they have, already two new uniforms have been donated as well as money to help replace equipment.

The Indianapolis Indians even heard about the tragedy and have offered to help make sure the team gets everything they need in order to start the season off right.

“We tell our kids never to give up, and this has shown them to never give up because people are there to help you, to back you, to push you even further,” said Breeding.

To these kids the help that the community is offering means everything.

If the team ends up getting more donations than they need to replace the equipment, the coach says they will start a scholarship program for baseball and softball players.

Breeding says there has already been multiple fundraisers set up in order to get this team back up on their feet. There is an alumni group from the 80’s that is raising money, there is also a GoFundMe account. The school is also accepting donations.
