IPS school hosts winter coat giveaway for students in need

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An elementary school on the city’s west side is trying to make sure its students have a little more warmth over the holidays.

The Lew Wallace School #107 hosted a winter coat giveaway on Friday, hoping to provide for the families of more than 500 students who may be in need. The district partnered with Kingsway Church to get coats, hats and gloves to those who need them most.

The school serves students who come from 27 countries and speak 31 languages. Many of those students and their families are refugees.

Lew Wallace Assistant Principal Jessica Smith, who spear-headed the effort, talked Friday about what inspired them to make it happen. Watch the video for more.

They will continue the effort for the Lew Wallace students on Monday.
