What you need to know to stay safe in the cold

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — With the frigid weather, the city of Indianapolis is warning people to be safe and be smart.

After a mild start to winter, Mother Nature has been back with full force this month

Every day, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Carl Bond at Kirk’s Used Tires fixes cars and tires outside.

“The only thing that could possibly stop us is if that compressor goes down. As long as that compressor is pumping air, we’re airing up tires and patching tires,” said Bond.

Bond works the same way no matter the weather, which should be well below freezing this weekend.

“Long johns, long socks, two pairs of socks, sweatpants with my work pants and at least three shirts. Long john shirt, a T-shirt under that, a sweatshirt and a work shirt,” said Bond.

Others tried to stay out of the cold as long as possible, but things like work come calling for D.J. Johnson.

“[Friday], yesterday, the week before, it’s been pretty cold for a while now,” Johnson said as he was heading home from work.

Not many people News 8 saw chose to be outside, but if you want to be or have no other choice and need a place to warm up, the city said you can always go to libraries, as well as Indianapolis park facilities and recreation centers during the day when they’re open.

If you are staying inside, there are important steps to take to stay safe and to avoid an expensive repair.

Allow water to drip from faucets and keep cabinets doors open where your pipes are to stop them from freezing.

Be careful how you heat your home. Experts say not to ever use a candle, stove or oven for heat and to take precautions if you use a space heater.
