Sheriff: Man shot himself while driving prior to fatal crash on Old US 31

AMITY, Ind. (WISH) — A 37-year-old man is believed to have shot himself while driving, initiating a fatal one-vehicle crash southeast of Franklin, the sheriff said Monday night.

Sheriff Doug Cox said in a statement issued about 7:30 p.m. that the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department and Amity Volunteer Fire Department were on the scene of the crash in the 2300 block of South Old U.S. 31. The address is about two miles southeast of Franklin.

The victim was identified as Ryan Woodall, who lived about a mile away.

“An autopsy will be performed in the morning but it appears that Ryan shot himself while driving,” said a second statement issued about 9:30 p.m. by the sheriff. “A firmarm was located in his vehicle.

“He then left the roadway becoming inverted after striking a tree and parked car.”

Alcohol was believed to have been involved, Cox said.

The fatal crash was the second one Monday in Johnson County. The earlier crash took the life of a 64-year-old man.
