Winter has picked up after a slow start

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — We’re just past the half way point of the winter weather season here in central Indiana. Here’s how we stack up so far.

The season got off to a slow start, both with snowfall and with temperatures. From Dec. 1 through Jan. 11, Indianapolis only picked up 0.5″ of snowfall, good for the 18th-least amount of snow for those dates.

On the temperature front, for those same dates we had an average temperature of 36.6°, which is good for 15th warmest for the time period.

Since then, we have flipped the switch on the season. Much colder air with a couple of decent snow falls has put as closer to where we should be for the season.

From Jan. 12 through Jan. 22, we’ve picked up nearly 10″ of snow, for a total of 10.4″ of snow for the winter season – now 2.4″ below average.

Our temperatures have cooled quite a bit as well. Average temperatures for the last week and half is right around 26°, which puts the winter average to date at 34.4°

At this point last year, we had only picked up 7.5″ of snowfall. Of course we ended the season near normal with our very late heavy snowfall in early April.
