Savannah police officer dies after shooting

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WISH) — Savannah police are mourning the loss of one of their officers who was killed in a shooting Saturday night, the Savannah Police Department said.

In a statement posted to social media Sunday morning, the department said an SPD officer succumbed to injuries sustained in the shooting.

Police said officers responded to the 2300 block of Bull Street around 8:00 p.m. Saturday to follow up on a robbery call. Two officers were approaching a suspect vehicle in the case when the shooting happened.

Both officers and the suspect were injured in the shooting. The second officer has since been released from the hospital and is recovering from injuries.

WSAV reports the fallen officer has been identified as Sgt. Kelvin Ansari. Ansari served on the force for 10 years. He also served with the U.S. Army for two decades prior to joining the Savannah Police Department.

A press conference is expected at some point Sunday.

“Please keep our officers and their families in your thoughts and prayers at this time. We want to thank the community for their continued support,” the department said online.
