Mount Vernon High School concert marks Black History Month
Mount Vernon High School students learn about black history through music
FORTVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — Students at Mount Vernon High School got to take a time-traveling tour through music Friday to celebrate Black History Month.
The school had its annual Black History Concert featuring the Mount Vernon Middle School principal on the drums. He joined Allen Burke, an Indiana Jazz Hall of Fame inductee, and other musicians to play music inspired by African-American culture.
This year, the school’s Black Student Union also got involved. Students say they asked teachers to decorate their doors with someone influential in the black community.
“Our main goal was to do something different that we haven’t seen at the school before,” said Madison King, a senior who is vice president of the Student Union. “We thought it’d be the perfect way to get the message across about different influential African Americans that have influence all of our lives in some way.”
This is the ninth year the school has had the concert.
