The Summer of RVs: What you need to know
If you’ve never thought about taking an RV trip before, the summer of 2020 is the year to do it! Jennifer Weatherhead Harrington, travel expert, shares resources to make your RV adventure safe and easy, plus your best bets for the most beautiful destinations to visit in the US..
It’s the summer of the RV!
It’s
true, Americans are really looking to get out on the open road this summer and
explore some of the natural beauty of the country.
A study shows that 40 million Americans regularly go RVing. And 8% of the 40 million people who own a recreational vehicle are Millennials. Which is probably why the hashtag #vanlife has been used around 6 million times on Instagram!
Another
study shows four
in 10 Americans expect their first trip to involve driving within 100
miles or so of their homes this summer. So it’s time to pack up the
RV!
What makes an RV trip so appealing?
Safety. First and foremost right now. Most Americans like the freedom and flexibility that RVing affords them for travelling, but this summer safety is also a key factor. RVing reduces your touch points or interactions with other people. You don’t have to worry about airplanes, hotels and more.
It’s
an easy way to see America’s natural beauty. As parks and campsites open up and
allow for overnight stays, you can expect that it will be a nature filled
summer for most Americans.
It’s
family-friendly and easy to travel in a bigger group than just a road trip. You
can even pack up your pet easily so you can bring the whole family.
You
can also transport more gear… so if you’re outdoorsy and love to bike, kayak or
fish, it’s a lot easier to bring your own equipment along for the
adventure.
If you are a first time RVer, how can they make it an
easy experience? What do you need to keep in mind?
It’s
not as daunting as you may think to do your first RV trip! Most RV rentals come
fully stocked with essentials like board games, kitchen and camping supplies.
And you can have your rental dropped off and picked up at a campsite.
You
can also visit GORving.com as a resource for planning, they have a trip
planning tool, tons of information on where to go, stops to make and all the
little details you need.
Any other tips to remember for a summer RV trip?
As
we go through the reopening of provinces and cities, remember to double check
to make sure camping sites and parks are open. And double check the state
guidelines if you are going to another state (do they still have quarantine
measures in effect, etc).
Some great RV adventures in Indy
There
are so many great options in the State! I’d recommend hitting up State Parks
when and where you can. Parks in the north like Indian Sand Dunes, or going to
the wineries in Harrison County, or head south to state parks like Charlestown
state park. Anywhere you can think of for a road trip that also has great park
or camping options makes for a great RV trip.
Thinking outside of Indiana…
One of the best things about America is how diverse the landscape is from coast to coast. If you’re up for a long road trip the possibilities are endless. Iconic stretches like the Pacific Coast Highway from San Fran to LA, The I-15 from Vegas to Salt Lake City, and the Great River Road from Memphis to New Orleans (crossing 10 States!). They may be farther to get to, but you have the means to do it in a big RV!
