10 hurt, 1 critical after northeast side motel fire

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Ten people were hurt in a two-alarm motel fire on the northeast side of Indianapolis early Wednesday morning.

Emergency crews were called to Indy Hotel at 38th Street and Emerson Avenue around 3:45 a.m.

Indianapolis Fire Department battalion chief Rita Reith said 10 people were pulled out by firefighters. Six of those were rushed to the hospital, including one person in critical condition.

About 45 people were evacuated from the motel, which offers extended stay rooms for low-income residents. Many of the people inside woke up to smoke and struggled to escape the fire.

The motel’s tenants were taken by bus to a shelter in Lawrence.

Firefighters had the fire under control in about 45 minutes. It caused approximately $80,000 in damage.

Flames were sparked in the basement, Reith said. It’s not clear how the fire began.
