Armed heroin dealer receives life without parole

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – An armed heroin dealer received a sentence of life without the possibility of parole Monday.

According to United States District Attorney Josh Minkler, 33-year-old Daniel Stewart will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

In January of 2015, Stewart was pulled over by IMPD for a traffic violation on the city’s north side.  At the time, officers discovered heroin, cocaine methamphetamine as well as a loaded 9mm handgun inside Stewart’s vehicle.  A search warrant was subsequently obtained by officers for Stewart’s apartment where more than two pounds of heroin, two killograms of cocaine, over 900 grams of meth, five firearms and nearly $500,000 in cash was found.

Stewart also had five previous felony convictions for drug crimes going back to 2002. As a result of those convictions, Stewart was not legally permitted to carry a firearm.

IMPD Chief Troy Riggs was pleased with the sentenced Stewart received.

“I applaud the efforts of the US Attorney’s Office and our detectives on the successful prosecution of Mr. Stewart,” said IMPD Chief Troy Riggs. “Arresting and prosecuting armed narcotics traffickers continues to be a priority to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. We will continue our efforts, target violent offenders terrorizing our community.”
