IndyGo rider, nearby homeowner on alert after bus passenger shot
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A passenger on an IndyGo bus was shot Tuesday morning, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
Around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, officers were called to a report of a person shot in the area of North Alabama and East North streets. That’s about five blocks northeast of Monument Circle.
Officers arrived to find a man with a gunshot wound to his hand. He was stable when taken to a hospital.
IMPD later said its early investigation indicated someone fired a shot from outside the bus. The bullet hit the man riding the bus.
No suspect or victim information has been released.
Another IndyGo passenger said the incident has him concerned.
Bus rider James Caldwell said, “You never know what is going to happen. You can’t imagine not riding the bus because that’s my only means of transportation right now. I guess you got to be ready for whatever goes down.”
Caldwell said he was shocked when he heard the news. “You never knew it was coming toward this way, but it happened,” he said. “You just have to be careful out there.”
One homeowner near the intersection where the shooting happened was worried to see the shooting in her neighborhood. “We like to be outside and play with our dog and go on walks and meet neighbors, so everyone seems friendly,” Deva Adams said.
Adams said the neighborhood has usually stayed quiet and calm in the past 2½ years that she’s lived there. However, within the past month or so, she said she’s noticed an uptick in crime.
“We had a bike that was stolen. You hear about this stuff but, once it happens to you, you become pretty freaked out about it, and literally two weeks after that a man tried to break into the house,” Adams said.
Adams said she hopes that this recent spike in crime does not become the new normal in her neighborhood.
“I don’t think I will ever become accustomed to it, and I don’t think that that should be a part of this neighborhood, or any neighborhood,” Adams said. “I would love to see more police around here. I feel like if we don’t call, we just don’t see them, so I would love to see more of that around here.”
