Funding to provide teens with summer jobs

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Ten organizations in Indianapolis are receiving funding to provide teenagers with summer jobs.

The funding is part of a push from the Department of Public Safety to get teens jobs in an effort to reduce the crime rate in that age group. The department says they want to help organizations that are already helping teens do even more work.

“I think that for some of them they can probably serve more youth because of the funding but I do know for certain that all of them were going to do the good work whether or not we stepped up to help with funding or not and that was very important for us.”

The different organizations include groups like Clean for Green and Stop the Violence Indianapolis.

Groups received funding ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. The amount of money given depended on proposals the groups sent in saying what they were doing to help students and how many teens they could reach.

The money comes from 38,000 raised in the 2015 season tip off jam at the start of summer along with donations.
