Hundreds in central Indiana walk, bike for World Car Free Day

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An organized effort to include central Indiana in World Car Free Day is planned for the first time Thursday.

Commuter Connect, a service of Central Indiana Regional Transportation Authority, has encouraged pledges online to seek travel alternatives to driving alone in a vehicle.

Drivers were asked to walk, bike, carpool or seek public transportation for the day.

World Car Free Day launched in 2000 to promote less car-dominated societies.

Individual communities have chosen to encourage the effort annually on Sept. 22.

As of Thursday morning, more than 500 people had pledged to participate through Car Free Day Indy. Click here for more information.

Commuter Connect organized celebrations throughout the day with food and live music hosted at Angie’s List headquarters, Monument Circle and Wal-Mart in Greenwood.
