IMPD officer injured in west side crash, transported to hospital

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A crash on the city’s west side Sunday morning sent an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer and another driver to the hospital.

The crash happened at around 12:45 at the intersection of 34th Street and Lafayette Road.

According to IMPD, the officer, who had a green light at the time, was traveling south on Lafayette Road when the driver of a gray Impala turned in front of him.

The officer’s patrol car, unable to miss the Impala, struck it on the passenger’s side. Both vehicles then spun as the Impala hit a light cabinet and a utility pole. The officer’s vehicle also hit a utility pole.

Officers say firefighters had a difficult time getting both out of the cars.

The driver of the Impala, who police say admitted to drinking earlier, was transported to Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital in serious condition. 

The officer was also taken to the hospital for possible internal injuries and possible concussion. IMPD says the officer is expected to make a full recovery. 

A blood draw, which is standard procedure, was administered to the officer and the other driver.

Police say the officer is not suspected to have been under the influence at the time of the crash.

Both are now in stable condition.

Police have not released the names of those involved in the crash.
