Indiana University Public Policy Institute releases report on crime in Indy

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – An eight page report details the criminal trends, the source, and the possible solutions to make Indianapolis a safer city.

The Indiana University Public Policy Institute and Chief Troy Riggs with Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department authored the report.

The overview took a look at homicides and non-fatal shootings between the years of 2012 to 2015. The study shows that in Marion County that homicides are the leading cause of death for men 18-to 24-year-olds.

Addressing mental health is also a point of topic. The Marion County Jail spent $8 million a year for Mental Health services. The cost includes care and treatment, security and medications.

Several goals were listed as possible solutions to prevent criminal activity such as rehabilitating offenders, addressing poverty and improving education.

Community involvement in developing and maintain in-depth understanding of communities that are at risk for violent crime.

The report also calls for consistency by providing programs to reduce crime and addressing systemic issues.

The report calls on collaboration between nonprofit organizations, the criminal justice system and other groups identified in the city.

Lastly, the report is pushing for a data-driven approach and initiatives which will maintain quality data collection, management, and analysis for both criminal justice-related agencies and community partners.

“It proves that we have a handful of individuals in this community that have a propensity to commit violent crimes, we don’t want to go after quantity,” said IMPD Chief Troy Riggs. “Our goal is not to have a record number of arrest next year, our goal is to have a record number of arrest for those that have violent backgrounds.”

IMPD plans to currently have monthly updates on criminal trends in the city.
