God’s Garage saves 85-year-old woman from spending hundreds on repairs

HEMLOCK, Ind. (WISH) — A retired Kokomo mechanic, who created a garage that fixes cars for free for the less fortunate, has changed the life of an 85-year-old woman.

It is housed at Crossroads Community Church in Kokomo, a few miles from the small community of Hemlock, where Shirley Oody lives.

Oody’s husband passed away from dementia and his car needed some work. She lives on Social Security, which she says isn’t that much.

A mechanic said she needed new struts, which would cost $885. But she couldn’t afford it.

“People think all elderly people have a lot of money and they don’t,” Oody said.

Her granddaughter heard about God’s Garage. She submitted an application and Oody was quickly approved.

“I prayed to God and he brought these people to my attention,” the 85-year-old said.

The work was completed in one day and the cost was a fraction of the price.

“It was only $263 compared to $885,” Oody said. “Some of these mechanics will try and take advantage of these older women too.”

Not only did God’s Garage fix the minimum, but changed her oil and fixed a tire.

Applications can be submitted everyday and the garage works on cars a few days a week. Currently, there is a wait-list.
