Indianapolis American Heart Association’s 5K Walk and Run goes virtual

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Thousands of people will walk or run for better heart health on Saturday.

It’s for the American Heart Association’s 5K Walk and Run, one of their largest fundraisers. It will be a virtual event due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It will be a digital experience on the Indianapolis American Heart Association’s Facebook page.

The goal is to raise $850,000 to help fund research, education and community programs. More than half of the money has been raised at this point.

Heart disease is the number one leading cause of death with stroke being the fifth highest, according to the American Heart Association.

Event chairman Mark Isenberg told News 8 one out of every three deaths is associated to heart disease and stroke.

“I think the one thing I want people to know is that 80% of heart disease is preventable by eating healthy and being more physically active and controlling the risk factor,” said Isenberg.

There will be a virtual yoga session at 8 a.m. with the opening reception at 9 a.m. on Saturday. People are encouraged to share photos online of their participating using #IndyHeartWalk.
