Man dead after report of shots fired on east side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A man has died after a report of shots fired Friday night on the city’s east side, police said.

The shooting occurred in the South 100 block of Catherwood Avenue, IMPD said in a tweet. An ambulance was dispatched nearby to Catherwood Avenue just south of East Washington Street shortly after the report of shots fired.

Genae Cook, a spokeswoman with IMPD, confirmed the fatality just before 10 p.m.

Police later said a male shot inside a car on Catherwood died.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department was dispatched shortly before 9:30 p.m. to the intersection of East Washington Street and North Webster Avenue on a report of shots fired.

Police say officers heard shots fired around East Washington Street and Catherwood Avenue. The officers then saw a car fleeing from that area and pursued it north on Arlington Avenue.

Eventually, the suspect crashed into a pole at 5900 Bolton Court in the Pangea Vistas Apartments complex. The suspect then ran from the scene but eventually was caught.

No one was hurt on Bolton Court.

Police initially would not confirm that the shooting was connected to the chase.

No other information was immediately available.
