(WISH) — Joe Hogsett will have a third four-year term as mayor of Indianapolis next year.

The Democrat led Republican challenger Jefferson Shreve with 97% of the ballots counted Tuesday night. In the update at 9:26 p.m. Tuesday from the Marion County Clerk’s Office, Hogsett had 95,592 votes and Shreve had 64,712 votes.

Shreve is the third Republican that Hogsett has defeated to keep the job. Indianapolis has not been led by a Republican since Greg Ballard left office Jan. 1, 2016.

In the Indianapolis suburb of Carmel, Sue Finkam will be the next mayor, Hamilton County Republicans announced Tuesday night. In the final tally, Finkam had 18,042 votes and Democrat contender Miles Nelson had 13,463 votes. Mayor Jim Brainard, also a Republican, announced in September 2022 that he would not seek reelection. Brainard was first elected in 1996.

Also Tuesday night in Hamilton County, voters in the school districts of Carmel Clay, Hamilton Southeastern and Sheridan approved operating referendums to raise additional tax dollars.

Back in Marion County, Democrat James Coffman will be the new mayor of Beech Grove, and Democrat Deborah Whitfield will be the new mayor of Lawrence.
