Some varieties of Hill’s canned dog food recalled due to excessive vitamin D
(KXRM) — Twenty-five different varieties of Hill’s canned dog food are being recalled due to excessive vitamin D.
Fourteen varieties of Hill’s Prescription Diet and 11 varieties of Hill’s Science Diet are being recalled due to potentially elevated levels of Vitamin D.
“While vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs, ingestion of elevated levels can lead to potential health issues depending on the level of vitamin D and the length of exposure, and dogs may exhibit symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss,” the company said in a statement. “Vitamin D, when consumed at very high levels, can lead to serious health issues in dogs including renal dysfunction.”
The company said anyone whose dog has eaten any of the affected products and is exhibiting any of these symptoms should contact a veterinarian. The dog usually recovers after discontinuation of feeding, according to the company.
The products were distributed through retail pet stores and veterinary clinics nationwide. Those who purchased the affected food should immediately stop feeding it to their dogs, then return it to the store for a refund, or throw it away.
Anyone with questions about the recall is asked to call Hill’s Pet Nutrition at 1-800-445-5777 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Mountain Time Monday through Friday, or email contactus@hillspet.com .
