February 2023; 5th warmest in Indianapolis with least amount of snow in 74 years

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH)– This February has made it into the top 5 warmest on record in Indianapolis. 2017 still holds the top spot as the warmest on record.

Let’s break it down a little more. The average temperature for the month was 40.2 degrees which is almost 8 degrees above normal. We did break a record high on February 22nd of 71 degrees. As far as precipitation goes we were right around normal for the month when it comes to rainfall. We received 2.55″ of rainfall which is just a tenth of an inch above normal. We really saw a big deficit in snowfall.

February 2023, ends up being only the 6th February in history with only a trace of snow. The last February with a trace was back 74 years ago in 1949.

Here’s a look at the temperature and precipitation outlook for March 2023. The Climate Prediction Center is forecasting slightly below normal temperatures for the month of March across much of the Great Lakes and back to the Pacific Northwest. Above normal temperatures are possible along the Gulf Coast. So the warm temperatures we’ve been experiencing here in Indiana may not continue into the first part of spring.

We may see above normal precipitation for the month of March across Indiana, Illinois and western Kentucky.
