5 children, 1 adult hospitalized after north side crash

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Five children and an adult were injured in a multiple-vehicle crash on the north side of Indianapolis Monday afternoon.

Indianapolis Fire Department spokesperson Rita Reith said a car heading east on 38th Street collided with three other vehicles, including a 15 passenger van carrying children returning from camp, at Central Avenue.

Emergency crews responded just after 4 p.m. and had to pull the car driver, a 29-year-old woman, out of her Ford Taurus.

Reith said all four vehicles were eastbound on 38th Street when the Taurus driver hit a Dodge Charger, the van and an SUV stopped at the light.

Five children — ages 6, 7, 10, 11 and 13, respectively — were taken to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health with minor injuries. An adult was transported to a hospital in serious with a broken ankle, according to Reith. Twelve other people involved refused treatment at the scene.

The intersection was shut down as crews investigated.
