Arrest made in east side shooting death of teen

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A man was arrested Saturday morning after the shooting death of a 17-year-old Friday on the east side.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to a shooting at 1900 block of Adams Street Friday at 11:35 a.m.

Robert Woods, 22, was arrested early Saturday at a home in the 1400 block of Orange Street. He faces a preliminary charge of murder.

A family member told 24-Hour News 8 that the victim was 17-year-old Kevin Cheeks.

The cries of the shooting victims’ mother and sister could be heard down Adams Street Friday.

“Mad, angry, livid, loss for words really,” his cousin Kevin Turner said.

Neighbors said they heard six or seven gun shots.

Police arrived and found the boy on the floor at the doorway.

He was pronounced dead when EMS arrived.

That’s when his cousin Kevin Turner got the call he never wanted.

“I found out when I was leaving my job earlier and got a phone call and rushed over,” he said.

Police believe the crime was targeted and possibly drug related.

But Turner said he doesn’t know why this happened, that Cheeks wasn’t the type of kid get into trouble.

“Quiet, didn’t mess with nobody, didn’t bother nobody,” he said.

He said the boy was often at this home but didn’t live there.

“I say wrong place wrong time,” he said.

Friday night police continued to follow leads as the family morned the loss of their brother, son, and cousin.
