Indiana police officer arrested for OWI

LAKE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) – A police officer with the Hammond Police Department was arrested by Indiana State Police early Saturday morning on State Road 2.

According to state police, a trooper was conducting a traffic stop on Interstate 65 near the Lowell/Hebron exit when the trooper witnessed a car pass another in the left lane and veer dangerously onto the exit ramp toward State Road 2.

The trooper ended the traffic stop on the interstate and pursued the erratic driver.

Police saw the driver cross the right fog line, weave and drive along the shoulder while traveling west on SR 2, police say.

Alcohol was detected on the driver’s breath during a traffic stop. The driver stated he had guns in the vehicle and was a Hammond police officer.

He was identified as 30-year-old Mathew L. Anderson of Hammond.

Anderson was offered the chance to perform field sobriety tests but refused, police say.

He was taken to the Lake County Jail and is being held on $1,000 bond. He faces possible charges of OWI and unsafe lane movement.
