Long-awaited Marion County mental health court up and running
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Marion County now has a mental health alternative court.
Efforts to get the court in Indianapolis began back in 2012.
With a jump start from the United Way of Central Indiana, the prosecutor and lawmakers, the court began operating in January 2015.
On Wednesday, the court became a full-time part of the county’s criminal court system.
It handles cases involving those convicted of a crime who are in need of care beyond the prison system.
Those going through the mental health alternative court must serve their full sentences.
