Much more rain heading our way
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — It sure feels like we’ve flipped the switch to spring. Mild temperatures, along with several rounds of rain over the last several weeks.
Let’s take a step back and look at the bigger picture. While our winter was seriously lacking in the snowfall department, we didn’t fall short in terms of liquid precipitation. In fact, the meteorological winter months of December, January and February produced the 13th wettest winter on record in Indianapolis, where we ran anywhere between 4″-6″ above normal across all of central Indiana.
We’re already approaching about 1″ of rainfall in Indiana for the month of March. This month opens the wettest 5-month stretch of the year, which peaks in May when we average just over 5″.
Active weather ahead means many more rain chances. In fact, the southern third of Indiana has a low end risk for excessive rainfall, which means around a 5%-10% chance for flash flooding.
Longer-range projections call for wet weather over the next 6-14 days, so many more opportunities ramp up the rain gauge.
This of course comes off an extremely wet early to mid-spring last year, which caused flooding issues and a major delay in to the growing season across much of the state.
