New Indiana poll shows Cruz with big lead over Trump

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A new poll is the first to show Ted Cruz leading Donald Trump in Indiana.

The survey of 400 voters across the state puts Cruz at 44 percent and Trump at 29 percent.

The poll results were released Friday by the Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics, a think tank based at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne .

Andrew Downs, one of the poll organizers, spoke to 24-Hour News 8.

“When the data came back I opened it up and I very quickly calculated the horse race question and immediately went down the hall and said, ‘We have a result that does not match what other people are getting,’” he said.

Downs added that only a handful of calls were made after Cruz announced Carly Fiorina as his running mate. The news that Kasich was pulling out of Indiana came in the middle of the survey.

The poll has a 4.9 percent margin of error.
