Woman shot dead in Indy while children present

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A woman was shot dead Wednesday morning on the far east side of the city, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officials said.

Officers were called around 5:20 a.m. to Wellington Village Apartments in the 7600 block of Little John Drive, which is near where I-465 and I-70 meet on the east side. IMPD officials said 911 dispatchers had received an incomplete 911 call from the address. Moments later, dispatchers received another 911 call, saying a woman had been shot in the head.

When police arrived at the scene, they say they found Nick Payne, 25, trying to usher four children into a car, in an attempt to leave the scene. Officers detained him and say he was in custody in connection to the shooting.

When they went inside the second-story apartment, they found Nakeda Norwood, 35, shot to death.

Multiple children were home at the time of the shooting, ranging in age from 8 to 13 years old. They were transported by IMPD Victims Assistance to a safe location.

Officials say they found the gun used in the incident on scene. They’re working to gather information from the scene and witnesses to determine what happened.

Although IMPD officials said the suspect isn’t from Indianapolis, they do believe he knew the woman but haven’t elaborated on their relationship.
